Product Description

San Pedro Necta is a Maya – Mam town in the Guatemalan highlands. The town is named after Saint Peter. The name Necta comes from the Mam “where the river flows”. However, the town is best known for its beautiful fabrics. The women of this town are skilled weavers, famous for their simple and original embroidered cotton local güipil [/wi-pil/], a traditional Mayan blouse. The fabric is carefully hand-woven and embroidered in wide horizontal pieces using a back-strap loom and colorful shades of bright red-colored cotton yarn. The intricately decorated pieces of fabric are later joined together at the shoulders with heavy embroidery stitches to make the distinctive güipil.

Although all güipil in San Pedro Necta are created in the same local tradition, each weaver subtly incorporates her own patterns of bright colors in zig-zagging geometric shapes, animals, and flowers, depending on individual style and taste. This makes each piece of woven fabric unique and special. Each of our San Pedro Necta Mayaxus sneakers is made from one of these pieces of woven fabric and is therefore unique. The left shoe is not exactly the same as the right!
